1. This really happened .....

During the early morning of Friday, 10 July 2026, the present writer woke with a feeling of happiness and joy, brought about by a realisation concerning the Holy Spirit; namely, that the Holy Spirit had been with him throughout his life, offering assistance and guidance, in good times and bad. The writer was instantly made aware of this fact, and it was a profound revelation. But how did this come to pass? What was the origin and nature of the somebody, or some thing, that had put these realizations and feelings into the writer's consciousness? Was it the actual Holy Spirit communicating with the writer? It could have been, and most probably was, though not in the form of a voice being heard; rather, as a knowing, a feeling, an assuredness that came with the morning. And it was as profound as it was simple.

The writer had often heard of people "discovering" Christ, or saying "Jesus spoke to me!" or something similar. But it was rare that they spoke of encountering the Holy Spirit in some form. It was sometimes said "The spirit filled me" and then they would state this it was God (the Father) or Jesus, but not specifically the Holy Spirit. But for the present writer, it was very different, and also very clear. And it did not take long to connect the dots.

So why the present writer, and why the Holy Spirit? Perhaps the fact that since 2015 the writer had been studying J.R.R. Tolkien's The Lord of the Rings and, within that, identifying its enigmatic and partially hidden Catholic core may have had something to do with it. That research, after almost a decade, revealed to the present writer the following knowledge:

Tom Bombadil is Tolkien's Holy Spirit in Middle-earth, the Secret Fire, the Flame Imperishable, the grace of God incarnate.

As part of that research, and the aforesaid revelation, a better understanding of the Blessed Trinity was also attained. This was in line with the description of the role of the Holy Spirit as presented in the Gospel of John, as follows:

Jesus Christ: "But when the Helper [Advocate / Comforter / Intercessor / Counselor / Strengthener] comes, whom I will send to you from the Father - the Spirit of truth who proceeds [comes] from the Father - [the Spirit / that One] will bear witness about me... When the Spirit comes, the world will be shown the truth about sin, righteousness and judgement.... When the Spirit of truth comes, you will be guided into all the truth... and told of things to come." (John 15:26, 16:8, 16:13)

These words precisely outline the actions of the two enigmatic Tolkien characters in regard to how they assisted and emboldened the hobbits to prepare and strengthen them for the task ahead, which was to destroy the Ring of Power. The awareness of the role of the Holy Spirit, as seen through Tom Bombadil and Goldberry, went beyond that as a youth raised by Josephite nuns and Marist priests in the Catholic faith. That understanding revealed the role of the Holy Spirit / Holy Ghost within a specific Three-Persons-in-One-God dynamic, as revealed in the Bible and Gnostic texts. So it was, a decade later, that the Holy Spirit was actually with the writer, if not within the writer, and had been so for an extensive period.

Between 2015 and 2022 the writer carried out a lot of research into the Holy Spirit, and also the Tolkien / Tom Bombadil / Goldberry connection. This included a number of video summaries during 2021-2022. One viewer noted the following upon viewing one of those presentations Which was simply titled Tom Bombadil - Who is he really?:

@kevinrussell1144: I've watched lots of videos about Tom, and you are the first that actually placed the true significance of Tom in proper light. He is NOT a lesser angelic figure, nor is he Tolkien, nor "music". As you say, all evidence points to him being SOME kind of manifestation of the Deity. I liked your mention of the Flame, and yes, Tom grants the hobbits Grace and prepares them for the coming struggles. The Riders don't appear in Tom's world because they do not belong there. Tom's country is magical and sinless, and Tom's casual treatment of the Ring shows that it does not belong there either. The first time I read the books I came to Tom and said "what the hell is this singing clown doing here"? The second time I began to realize that all was not as it appeared. These chapters are the best part of the books. They show what Paradise on earth might be like, and isn't that a rather important notion to explore? Check out, too, what they eat. No sentient thing is consumed at their table, yet they eat, and there is birth, growth, death, and transformation. And isn't it interesting after Gandalf's long struggle against evil and even coming back from a form of death, he stops by for a LONG talk with Tom before appearing next at the Havens? Tom stays. He is the narrow way, and the path to his house is not easy to find, but it is there.

2. The journey continues.....

What next? What are the implications of the 2026 revelation? Well, the aforementioned videos support much of what the writer had determined in the days following the revelation, namely, to accept the presence of the Holy Spirit in his life and to engage with that presence in whatever form manifests and however possible. The joy arising from that awareness of an intimate relation with God remains, despite an incredulity in truly understanding that knowing. The next stage in the journey is obviously the connection with the Divine Feminine., as other research in the Gnostic texts and the true story of Mary Magdalene has revealed the connection between the Holy Spirit and that concept. Rather than being a "He" or and "It", the Holy Spirit can be aligned with the concept of the Divine Feminine and the force of Creation. That is a concept and reality that was largely expunged from the Christian church due to the inherent misogyny of men, including the male apostles and the subsequent leaders of the churches. This topic is discussed elsewhere, in the links at the top and bottom of this article. It is interesting that J.R.R. Tolkien, in addressing the Holy Spirit within The Lord of the Rings and his greater legendarium should present the reader with both male and female manifestations, in the form of Tom Bombadil and Goldberry.
